A Little History of Burts Gwalia Bakery – Since 1914
The story of Burts Gwalia Bakery began in 1914, when Reginald Charles Burt became the resident baker at the original Gwalia Bakery in Ogmore Vale, a small coal-mining community in South Wales. The bakery was part of Gwalia Stores, a general store that served local families and miners. Over time, the little bakery developed into a family business, passing its baking traditions from one generation of the Burt family to the next.
Today, Burts Gwalia Bakery continues its proud Welsh baking heritage, specializing in traditional British tea cakes, rich fruit cakes, and handcrafted biscuits. Interestingly, the original Gwalia Stores building has been preserved at the St Fagans National Museum of History in Cardiff, celebrating its place in Welsh history.
More than a century after its beginnings, the Burt family continues to honor the traditional recipes and baking craftsmanship that made the bakery a cherished name.
