The story of Burts Gwalia Bakery began in 1914, when Reginald Charles Burt became the resident baker at the original Gwalia Bakery in Ogmore Vale, a small coal-mining community in South Wales. The bakery was part of Gwalia Stores, a general store serving local families and miners. Over the years, the bakery grew into a cherished family business, passing its traditional recipes and baking skills through three generations of the Burt family.
The original Gwalia Stores building is now preserved at the St Fagans National Museum of History in Cardiff, celebrating its importance in Welsh heritage. Today, Burts Gwalia Bakery continues to produce traditional British tea cakes, fruit cakes, and biscuits, honoring the recipes and craftsmanship that began more than 110 years ago.
